The Citadel, Class of 1940. Commander of B Company, 741st Tank Battalion; unit went ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day using 'duplex drive' Sherman tanks fitted with flotation bladders and propellers, all sank before reaching shore but CPT Thornton was rescued and rejoined his company the following day and participated in the fierce fighting during the breakout from Normandy. Reported MIA during combat near the Siegfried Line in Luxembourg, body never recovered.
