He resided in Lane County, Oregon prior to the war.
B17-G #42-102610 took off, with a crew of 9, from Nuthampstead, England on a bombing mission over Bischofsheim, Germany. Shortly after takeoff this B-17 was seen with smoke trailing from the engines and to eventually crash into the English Channel. Upon impact with the water the B-17 exploded. Rescue operations found "1" crew member struggling in the water ( 1st Lt. Walker ) but they were unable to rescue him before he perished. The remains of "2" other crew members were also later found ( S/Sgt.'s Fox & Stewart ). The remains of the rest of the crew were never found.
John was "Killed" in the "Line Of Duty" in this crash during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal with "2" Oak Leaf Cluster.
Service # O-720043
It was noted that John was the "only" crew member to survived the crash. One of the rescue crew jumped in the water and tried to rescue John. However, due to possible shock, John continued to try to avoid the rescue until such time as the rescue crewman, to save his own life, had to abandon trying to restrain John. John soon, sadly, drowned.
