Catharina Maria Elisabeth Jahns was born in the village of Adenstedt (near Peine), Hannover, Germany, 1797. Her father was Julius Daniel Jahns.

Elisabeth married Heinrich Schlue (1797-1871) in Adenstedt about 1824. They had six children: Dorette (b 1826), Johann (b 1828), Heinrich (b 1830), Dina (b 1831), Wilhelm (b 1834), and Carl (b 1837). Of these children, Johann died 1829, Heinrich and Carl emigrated to Australia in 1854, Dina came to the U.S. aboard the "Fides" in 1855, Wilhelm came to the U.S. with his parents in 1858, and Dorette married Johann Heinrich Peter Kaune in 1852 and remained in Germany.

Elizabeth, her husband Heinrich, and their son Wilhelm came to the U.S. aboard the "Uhland" in 1858 and settled in Missouri.
