STATE COLLEGE, Pa.; April 14, 2003. Mary Weber "Sunny" Engle, the wife of former Penn State football coach Charles "Rip" Engle, passed away Sunday at Brookline Village in State College. She was 94. Mrs. Engle was a resident of State College since 1950, when her husband was named the Nittany Lions' 13th head football coach after a successful tenure at Brown. During his 16 seasons as head coach, he earned a 104-48-4 record, winning three bowl games and three Lambert Trophies. He passed away in State College on March 7, 1983. Sunny Engle was born December 21, 1908 in Easton. A 1929 graduate of Western Maryland, she married Rip Engle that same year. He was a 1930 Western Maryland graduate. She did graduate work at University Paris 1 - the Pantheon Sorbonne, and for several years taught French in schools in Waynesboro, Pa., when her husband was the football coach at Waynesboro High School. Mrs. Engle was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church as well as he Daughters of the American Revolution and the Antiquists Club. "She was a lovely and elegant lady," said Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, who succeeded her husband in 1966. "She was a wonderful coach's wife. She was always there for me, helping me when I was bachelor and a young coach on Rip's staff. She had a great life and was a wonderful person to be around." "She was a remarkable woman," stated Fran Fisher, longtime radio voice of the Nittany Lions who retired after the 1999 season. "Sunny was a delightful person and had many friends in the community." Mrs. Engle is survived by one son, Charles B. "Chip" Engle, two grandsons and two great grandsons. Burial will be in Salisbury Cemetery in Salisbury, Pa.
