George was born in Ohio and moved to Kosciusko County, Indiana in early 1850's with his parents, Isaac & Rachel [Reed] Whitney. He married Almira Harnden on January 20, 1866 in Casco Twp, Allegan County, Michigan and had two daughters, Laura & Glencora. He married 2nd Mary Jane Miller in abt 1888. George was a Civil War Veteran. He enlisted on September 13, 1861 and served in the 30th Indiana Co I as a private. On Monday morning, April 7, 1862 George was hit behind the right ear with buckshot/small ball at the Battle of Shiloh, had the wound probed but the miniball was not found. About eight days later, George was struck on the right shoulder and spine by a tree which was felled by fellow soldiers as they were building a bridge across a swamp on the march from Shiloh to Corinth, Mississippi. In June 1862 he suffered severe sunstroke and was hospitalized in Florence, Alabama for nearly two months. He was discharged at Whiteside, Tennessee on January 7, 1864. He then re-enlisted as a veteran in the US Veteran Volunteers, Co E, as an articifer and was honorably discharged in Sept. 1865, Nashville, TN. His final Civil War pension check was returned from Leedy, MT (deceased). His cemetery plot in Malta, Montana was purchased by his nephew Amos Whitney of Malta. By the 1870 Census, George had left his family in Allegan and returned to his parents' home in Kosciusko County, Indiana. He did not have contact with his children after that time.
