He went by his middle name, Hampton. Hampton's father died suddenly when Hampton was only about a year old. His mother returned to her hometown, Willow Fork, Missouri to be near both her family and her husband's family, but eventually had to send some of her children into other families. Hampton was sent to live with his mother's sister, Minnie Lee (Lewis) Hutchison, and her family. When Hampton was about 13-years old, he lost an eye in an accident and wore a glass eye the rest of his life. Shortly afterward, he reunited with his mother and siblings in Kansas City, Missouri, where his mother had gone to find better work opportunities. Hampton married Mary Juanita Dinsmore. Their children were David Hampton Jr. "Butch" Hays, and Edwin Lee "Teddy" Hays, both of whom preceded Hampton in death. Hampton was a bookbinder by profession.
