Leon worked for Post Cereals in Battle Creek, MI for a couple of years, but returned to MS because he didn't like the cold winters in the north. In his early years he farmed and raised cattle. Prior to working for Post, and after returning to MS, he worked for Lauderdale County, beat 3, as a heavy equipment operator (dragline) building and repairing county roads. After retiring from County, he worked part time as a security guard for the Ford Automoble dealer in Meridian.

He married the former Ola Slayton on August 11, 1930 in Hickory, Newton Co., MS.
