OBITUARY:

Eugene "Gene" E. Smith, 91, died July 7, 2008 at Brewer Rehab Facility. He was born October 28, 1916, in Pembroke, the eldest son of the late Perley and Lillian (Stanhope) Smith. Gene had recently been a resident of Woodlands Residential Care Facility in Brewer. He started working at the age of nine to help his family. Gene worked as a Merchant Marine on the Great Lakes during World War II and until 1956. Gene then worked for St. Regis Paper Company until his retirement in 1981. He worked the last log drive on the Machias River. Gene was a member of the United Steelworkers Union. After his retirement, Gene spent many summers camping and flounder fishing. He enjoyed lunches at the White House Restaurant. Gene could always be seen walking through Harrington with his friends, George Frye and "Prid" Dowling or having "discussions" at the Post Office every morning. Gene is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen Smith; two sons, Dean Smith and wife, Gloria, of Hermon, and Arlo Smith and wife, Bonnie, of Perry; two daughters, Marie Murphy of Harrington and Rebecca Atwater of Steuben; three brothers, Roland and wife, Edie, of Machias, and Perley, wife, Ina, of Jay, and Alton of Westbrook; two sisters, Barbara Mitchell and Patricia Worcester of Harrington; thirteen grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 5 great- great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Jessie McHatton; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Gene was precedeased by brothers, William and Philip; a sister, Olie; one infant grandson, Toby Smith; a son-in-law, Leon Atwater; and best friend, George Frye. The family would like to especially thank the nurses and staff at both Brewer Rehab and Woodlands for the excellent care given to Gene. Visiting hours will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, July 10, 2008 at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Milbridge where a funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 11, 2008 officiated by Kendrick Randall. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery in Harrington. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Anah Shrine Temple, 586 Main Street, Bangor, ME 04401. www.bragdonkelley.com
