Funeral obsequies were held at the Vaiden Methodist Church, Friday, October 2, for James Charles Bennett, whose death occurred at an early hour Thursday, at the Winona Hospital.
Mr. Bennett was born near Black Hawk, Carroll County. He was the son of the late Charles Winfrey Bennett and his wife, Mrs. Mary Heard Bennett, pioneer settlers, and influential citizens in that section of this county.
In July, 1889, he was married to Miss Bessie Kaigler of Vaiden. For more than fifty-three years they have lived here, and their home was known for its culture and hospitality, its Christian training. For many years their home was blessed by the presence of her mother, Mrs. Cowles Kaigler, the beauty of whose life left its imprint upon the lives of the young people of this family.
Mr. Bennett was prominent in the business world in this community, and for a number of years operated a grocery store here, retiring from business several years ago, when his health failed. This long season of invalidism was borne with marked fortitude and patience.
Mr. Bennett had been a member of the Methodist Church since early manhood. His pastor, Rev. A. L. Davenport, who conducted the funeral service, read his favorite chapters in both old and new Testaments. Family and friends were comforted by the words of his pastor and also those in the special song, "Some Day We'll Understand," sung by Mrs. J. A. Minga of Winona.
Interment followed in the family lot in the Odd Fellows Cemetery with Trewolla Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The grave was covered with many beautiful flowers.
Surviving are his widow, two daughters, Mrs. T. W. Holmes of Winona and Mrs. E. H. Davidson of Junction City, Ark, and one son, Percy Bennett of Vaiden, five grandsons, Wiburn, Jr., and Jack Holmes, James Hailey and Charley Davidson and Percy Bennett, Jr., and one granddaughter, Margaret Cade Bennett.
