Gottlieb served as a Private with the 2nd Delaware Infantry, Company G during the Civil War.

He "Died Of Poisoning" during the war. While in Cambridge, Maryland he, along with fellow Private " Samuel C. Bracey ", were poisoned by southern sympathizing townspeople.
