Died of disease May 23 1863 Cairo,IL

Erasmus was a resident of Elkader, Clayton County, Iowa, when he enlisted Oct. 23, 1861 at the age of 44 years. He mustered in Co B 4th Iowa Cavalry Nov. 23, 1861. Discharged for disability Jan. 29, 1862 at Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

A memorial headstone for Erasmus Stockton is located at Elkader Cemetery in Clayton County, Iowa (78761249).

Admitted Post Hospital, Houston, MO, Feb. 10, 1863, Pneumonia, transferred Feb. 27, 1863, admitted Post Hospital, Rolla, MO, Mar. 3, 1863, Acute Diarrhea, returned to duty Mar. 8, 1863. Disembarked from steamer Argonaut admitted General Hospital, Cairo, IL, Mar. 28, 1862, Tonsillitis, died of Pneumonia, April 20, 1863. Reported dead May 23, 1863. Burled Section F, Grave 4669, Mound City National Cemetery, Mound City, IL.

A certificate of disability for discharge dated June 30, 1863, and signed by Gilbert Cooley then commanding the company says Erasmus' death was due to pneumonia.
