From the Richmond Times, Apr. 7, 1899:
H. A. Atkinson, Sr., died at his late residence, 2620 east Grace street, yesterday at 10 o'clock, in the eighty-fourth year of his age, having been born on the 5th day of May, 1815, in New Kent county, Va.
He married a sister of the late John A. Belvin and was his partner in the well-known firm of Belvin & Atkinson, wholesale and retail furniture dealers.
Mr. Atkinson retired from business some years ago. He leaves surviving him four children - Mrs. W. J. Gentry, Mrs. Lucie F. Fleet, of Mathews county, ex-Senator H. A. Atkinson, Jr., and William H. Atkinson.
He was probably the oldest Methodist in Richmond, and was the president of the Board of Stewards of Union Station church. Mr. Atkinson has been confined to his bed for sixteen years, suffering from an accident sustained by a fall about that time while visiting Bon Air.
He was an explemplary citizen, noted for his strict business integrity and Christian character, which has left its impress upon the community in which he lived.
The funeral will take place from Union Station Methodist church, on Sunday at 3 o'clock P. M.
