Mrs. Betty Lou Bankhead Dyke went on to be with her Heavenly Father and Savior, on Saturday, June 26, 2010. She was 83 years old.

Betty Lou Bankhead was born on May 9, 1927 in Cherokee County, Galena, Kan., to Ivia (McCormick) Bankhead and George Bankhead.

She was very proud of her heritage - American Indian, Choctaw and Cherokee. Betty was the 13th of 14 children. A twin with a brother, Bobby, passed away as an infant.

Betty moved to Mojave in her early teen years and married Lloyd Leo Dyke at the age of 15. They were married 63 years. She had been a resident of Kern County for over 70 years living in Mojave, North Edwards and Boron.

Betty was a very resourceful woman. She taught herself and many others to play piano and guitar, to crochet blankets and doll clothes, paint, draw, and write stories and poems. Betty has written hundreds of poems for all occasions, especially for the birth of each grandchild, great-grandchild and great-great-grandchild.

She was a faithful believer in Jesus Christ, our Savior, and led many people to the Lord. She was a true matriarch of the family who had enough love for her huge family and many people who considered her family.

Lloyd and Betty enjoyed CB radio clubs in their early years and were often referred to as Horsetrader and Groovy Grandma! They enjoyed playing music in churches, coffee breaks (CB radio club events) and spread their love at convalescent hospitals.

Betty was a charmer to the very end, having all the nurses and her doctor fall in love with her.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lloyd Dyke, grandson, Steve Franks, granddaughter, Kayla Blackmore, and all 13 siblings.

Betty is survived by her children Lloyd Leroy (Lynda) Dyke, Greenville, Mich.; Jane (Ted) Smith, Tehachapi, Calif.; Linda (Rick) Peters, Edwards, Calif.; Edith Cookie (Brian) Shapiro, Orofino, Idaho; and Ethel Dyke, North Edwards, Calif.

She is also survived by 15 grandchildren whom she loved dearly: Debbie Rodden and Ray Martin; Darla and Terrell Lambeth; Greg and Susie Peters, Wayne Johnson, Nick and Michelle Smith, Aaron Smith, Betty Franks-Geopfert; Amanda Franks; Angela Franks; Holly and Brandon Griffiths; Nezbeth Lynne and Eric Bell; Glenn "Bubbie" Windham; Jennifer and Mike Silica; Jeff and Candace Dyke.

Betty was blessed to be a great grandmother of 42 and a great-great-grandmother of 10. She was indeed a blessed woman!

Betty's family would like to especially thank Dr. Ko of Lancaster and the many nurses and others at Antelope Valley Hospital for their incredible care and allowing her to pass to heaven in comfort and peace.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 1, 2010 at the Assembly of God church in Mojave. Burial was held at the Mojave Cemetary.

The family also thanks Stickel Mortuary for handling the arrangements.
