William Kenton and his family left Fauquier County, Virginia on 16 September 1783 in the company led by his brother, Simon Kenton. Their destinations were an area now known as Mason County, Kentucky. Finding many traces of Indians upon their arrival, they traveled through the forest to the present Mercer County area. The family of William resided in this area for eleven years, moving to the Mason County area (ca. December 1794) for a short time before migrating to Ohio.
