Arthur, age 18, enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 26 August 1861 at Charleston, South Carolina. He was mustered on 3 September 1861 at Lightwood Knot Springs near Columbia, South Carolina as a Private in Company L, 1st (McCreary's) South Carolina Infantry. On 20 September 1862 he was wounded, receiving a gun shot wound to his left ankle. After five months it was determined at the hospital in Staunton, Virginia that his condition was permanent and he was discharged from service on 11 February 1863. At that time he was described as follows: born in Charleston, South Carolina; occupation Cooper; five feet & six inches tall; fair complexion; grey eyes; brown hair; and age 18 years.

Son of John Lanneau Bell and Dorinda Burham.
