Ferdinand was the fifth son of Charles and Catharine (Wise) Strayline born in Philadelphia, PA in 1849. In 1850, his family lived in Spring Garden and his father was a hotel keeper. The oldest son, George W. Strayline was married and lived in the South Mulberry Ward. In 1860, Ferdinand's mother was living with five of her sons, including George who had returned to his mother's household. Three of the older boys (George, Charles and Theodore) fought for the Union army during the Civil War, the youngest of the three, Theodore, died at the Battle of Gettysberg. By 1870, Ferdinand was working as a paper boy and living with his mother and two brothers. By 1880, Ferdinand is still at home with his mother and brother Augustus. By 1900, Ferdinand was a boarder in a house located at 1424 Melon Street in Philadelphia and was working as a carpenter. He was then 52 years of age. He died in 1915 and was originally buried at American Mechanics Cemetery; the remains of the Strayline family buried there were moved to Philadelphia Memorial Park in 1951.
