Peter Duryea was born in 1816 in Chautaqua County, New York, son of Albert P. Duryea and Agnes Wortendyke. He was married on 9 NOvember 1839 to Eliza Van Blarcom.

Peter learned the tailoring trade which he followed in a shop connected with a general store located probably in Piermont, N. Y., where he boarded with the owner. An early account book of this store shows that in 1837 he was making pantaloons, vests, jackets and coats. In 1840 Peter received a deed (unrecorded) from his father for 10 acres of land lying on both sides of Grotke Road, out of the center part of a tract of 38-1/2 acres purchased 7 May 1840 from the heirs of uncle John (85). At that time Peter is believed to have built the small frame dwelling now at #62 Grotke Road. They lived here until about 1845 when they moved to N. Y. C., to follow his trade, and where Eliza was a seamstress making men's fancy vests. In the city they resided at #150 west 16th Street, and later at #88 Avenue Nine and #213 West 19th Street. Eliza joined the Greenwich Reformed Church 7 Apr 1848. Peter was a member of the State Militia while living in the city. On 26 Mar 1853 they sold the Grotke Road house to his father for $700. On 1 Feb 1855 he purchased from Abraham J. Post for $2800, a house and lot on the south side of 60th Street, which were sold back to Post 1 May 1857 for $2900. Prior to 1864 the family moved to Sherman, Chautauqua County, N. Y., where Peter operated a dairy farm. This was probably sold before 1872 at which time they were living at #72 West 20th Street in Erie, Pennsylvania, a few miles to the west. The following year the family moved to a farm in the Grand Traverse area of Michigan, near Long Lake in Long Lake Township.

The family purchased land in Long Lake township in 1874. Peter operated a farm there.

Peter died on 31 July 1892 (according to death certificate, note death notice below says 30 July) from apoplexy and paralysis in Long Lake township. The Grand Traverse Herald reported: Peter Duryea, who has been sick nearly two years, died Saturday morning, July 30th. Five children are left to mourn the loss of a father. A large crowd of friends and neighbors attended his funeral which was held at the house last Sabbath. Rev. Mead Kelsey conducted the services."
