George W. Smith, a Kittitas Valley pioneer, died at the Ellensburg General Hospital early this morning at the age of 95 years.
A member of a pioneer California and Puget Sound family, he came to the valley in 1877. In recent years he had lived both in California and on the Sound.
He was born in Placer County, California, in 1853, the oldest son of John W. Smith and Malinda Packwood Smith. His mother was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Packwood who crossed the plains in 1849 to California. Her parents moved to Olympia, Washington territory and Mrs. Smith and her three children accompanied them. Mrs. Smith made her home at Olympia until her death. John W. Smith was from Liverpool, England. Her family sent him to California in one of its numerous vessels and he sent the ship back to England and remained in California until his death.
George W. Smith came to the Kittitas Valley in 1877. Here he married Clara May Olmstead, the only daughter of Samuel Bedient Olmstead, one of the valley's early settlers.
George Smith received an Indian pension from the federal government, granted by a special act of Congress for fighting in the Indian Wars in Oregon Territory in the early days.
He is survived by two daughters, Clareta and Leta May Smith, both of Ellensburg. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
