Services for George "Putz" DeBoer, 75, were held Tuesday, November 23, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Chamberlain with the Rev. Duane Neugebauer officiating. Burial was at Riverview Cemetery in Chamberlain. George passed away November 19, 1999 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls of heart failure.
George was born April 8, 1924 in Corsica to Barney and Jennie DeBoer. George was raised in Corsica and attended school there. He entered the military on March 12, 1943 at Fort Crook, Nebraska, and was honorably discharged on January 22, 1946 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
He married Leone VanderPol on October 25, 1946. George spent the majority of his working career as an electrician with the Corps of Engineers and retired in 1990.
In 1962, George and Leone and their children moved to Chamberlain. At that time, George and Leone managed and eventually purchased Van's Trailer Court.
One of George's greatest joys was attending the activities of his grandchildren. Each grandchild has cherished memories of times spent with Grandpa including sporting events, rodeoing, fishing, golfing or just sitting around the table visiting. George's humor and zest for life was as much a trademark as his little silver car and "locked on" cap.
His community involvement, whether serving on city or church council or volunteering at the Mid-Dakota Hospital gift shop denoted his enthusiasm for his hometown and its people.
The special relationship between George and Leone was made evident by the many hours they spent together. His top priority was always his family.
He is loved and mourned by his wife Leone; his children, Georgia Talsma and husband Larry, Avon; Margo Heinert, Batesland; Dotty Hieb and husband Scott, Chamberlain; and Donn DeBoer and wife Nancy, Chamberlain. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Troy and Kylee Heinert, T.J. and Justin Steckelberg, Donavan, Dakota and Deah DeBoer, and Ty Talsma; two great grandchildren, T.J. and Jordan Heinert.
He is also survived by two sisters, Ann Murray, Grandville, Michigan, and Joanne Bettenhausen, Grand Rapids, Michigan; and two brothers, Sam DeBoer, Churchhill, Montana, and Alvin DeBoer, Elko, Nevada.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Elizabeth Goemaat, one brother Lyle, one son-in-law Harold Heinert and one granddaughter Tanya Talsma.
