Benjamin married Henrietta Sutphen in 1704, in Long Island, NY. They had at least 6 children, but there were almost certainly more to be uncovered by future research:

-Elizabeth Van Cleaf (1705-abt.1785)
-Elsie Van Cleaf (b.1707)
-Johannes Van Cleaf (1711-1777)
-Mary Van Cleaf (1715-1789)
-Richard Van Cleaf (1718-1766)
-Benjamin Van Cleaf (1721-aft.1785)

It is believed that Benjamin's parents immigrated from Kleef, Netherlands in the mid 1600s.

Mother: Engeltje Laurense (b.1646), burial unknownBenjamin was Baptized on November 25, 1683, at the Flatbush Reformed Dutch Church, Kings County, New York. He was a twin to Joseph.

He married circa 1703, to Henderika Sutphin.

Benjamin settled at Pleasant Valley, Monmouth County, New Jersey prior to 1711. He and Henrietta were members of the Freehold-Middletown Dutch Church. He made several purchases of land in Monmouth County.

His descendants use the surname spellings of Van Cleef, Cleaf and Clief.
