DEATH OF MRS. SYDNEY E. MUDD.
Wife of Maryland Congressman Passes
Away at Her Home in La Plata. Mrs. Sydney E. Mudd, wife of the represensitive in Congress from the fifth Maryland district, died at her home in La Plata, Charles county, Md., yesterday afternoon.
She was forty-eight years of age. Mrs. Mudd's maiden name was Ida Grif-
fin. She was the daughter of Walter P.
and the late Eleanor Bryan Griffin, and
was born at the family homestead, High-
land Hall, near Surrattsville, Prince
George county. In her youth she was re-
garded as one of the beautiful women of
Maryland. At the tournament at the
Philadelphia centennial exposition she was
crowned as the most beautiful woman in
The United States. Her children, Mrs. J. Carlisle Wilmer, Sydney E. Mudd, jr., W. Griffin Mudd and Thomas B. R. Mudd, survive Mrs. Mudd. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock. Interment will be made at St. Thomas' Church, Chapel Point. The death of Mrs. Mudd is the second sorrow that has recently come to the family. Mrs. Nellie Griffin Brown, a sister of Mrs. Mudd, died from the effects of a surgical operation at Providence Hospital, March 21. Walter Griffin, a brother of Mrs. Mudd, derved in the 1st Volunteer Cavalry (Rough Riders) in the Spanish war, and later with The British forces in South Africa, where he was killed, a medal of honor being sent by the British sovereign to the family in Maryland. - - Published in The Evening Star, Tuesday, June 4, 1907.
