Bradford served in the Michigan 26th Regiment, Company I. After more than a year of skirmishes, the Regiment was sent to New York City to help quell the draft riots, and Bradford contracted Granular Ophthalmia and was hospitalized more than 6 months. This was "an acute and severe form of purulent conjunctivitis -- an inflammation of the membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the exposed surface of the eyeball." (Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary, 24th Ed.) This must have been a very painful affliction at that time, when there was really no effective treatment. He was mustered out near Alexandria, Virginia, on June 4, 1965, and claimed "Invalid" pension funds in February 1884.
