Rev. Laban Carroll, itinerant Baptist minister. 1841-1868
Laban was the son of Benajah and Mary Eliza (Mallard) Carroll. Of the family of 12, there were nine sons, three of them Baptist preachers, as was Benajah. The preachers were Laban, J.M. and B.H. Carroll. J.M. Carroll pastored the First Baptist Church of Lampasas from 1882 to 1887. In the story of his life, he tells about Laban: (from Texas Baptist Historical Collection, 333 N. Washington, Dallas, TX 75246)
"Brother Laban, living in the Wilkinson home some six miles away, was taken sick with yellow jaundice. And Mother had to go to him. But it was finally decided to bring brother Laban to our home. (Waco) Still he made no improvement. He finally expressed a desire to go to Lampasas Springs, believing it would help him. Mother, Frank, Mollie, and Eugene, with a hired young man, together with brother Laban went. Some two of three weeks only had gone by when the sad news came that brother Laban had died within ten miles of Lampasas."
The Sparks family and Carroll family had known each other in Arkansas before coming to Texas. The Sparks family arrived in Lampasas in 1857. The Carroll family settled in Burleson County, Texas in 1854. It is believed that Rev. Carroll was a former minister of Flat Creek Baptist Church, Fountain Hill, Arkansas.
