B-17F -50- BO 42-5376 JJ - X 'Eager Eagle'

305th BG, 422nd BS


On August 31, 1943, B-17F, registered 42-5376 and named 'Eager Eagle' was involved in a midair collision while on a night training flight with a Bristol Beaufighter, V8715, from 96 Squadron RAF. Both planes were flying without navigation lights as they were above 5,000 feet and there was a red airaid alert in effect. The Beaufighter hit the B-17 between number three and four engines. The aircraft crashed near Church Farm, Foulsham, Norfolk. Two of the crew of the B-17 managed to bail out and survive but all others on both aircraft were killed.
