BARRY COUNTY, MICHIGAN, DEATH RECORDS (1869), Pg. 26, Record No. 272 - JACOB CRONK (Male - White - Married), died 3 July 1869, aged 77, in Hastings, of Dropsey. Jacob was born in New York and was a Farmer. He was the son of STEPHEN & KATY CRONK of Unknown Residence.

NOTE: JACOB CRONK had a brother, STEPHEN CRONK or CRONKHITE, in Hartwick, Otsego Co., NY, who died childless on 5 August 1867. In his estate, he left his brother, Jacob, $499.00. Before Jacob was located and his inheritance paid out, Jacob died 3 July 1869. Jacob's three children, LEVI, ALMIRA & ROYAL, had to go thru Probate Court in order to collect their dead father's inheritance from his brother, Stephen. The two documents copied below have genealogical value on at least two fronts: 1. Establishing a relationship with a family member back in New York State, and 2. documenting the previous and older surname, CRONKHITE, which was largely shorted to CRONK by family members in the mid-19th century.

To the Hon. S.C. PRINDLE Judge of Probate for the County of BARRY in the State of Michigan:

The Petition of ROYAL + LEVI CRONKHITE, and ALMIRA MARTIN who ARE of the age of twenty-one years and upwards, of the County of BARRY respectfully shews:

That JACOB CRONKHITE late of HASTINGS in said County of BARRY departed this life in said TOWNSHIP of HASTINGS on the 3d day of JULY in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-NINE leaving NO last Will and Testament, as your petitioner AM informed and verily believe.

That said deceased was, at and immediately previous to his death, an inhabitant of said County of BARRY and that he was possessed of PERSONAL Estate, situate and being in the County of BARRY + OTSEGO COUNTY, N.Y., to be administered, and that the estimated value thereof is the sum of FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS or thereabout, as your petitioner AM informed and verily believe.

And your petitioner further shewS that the name and residence of the heirs at law of said deceased, and other persons interested in his estate, are as follows:
YOUR PETITIONERS ALL RESIDING IN HASTINGS IN SAID COUNTY OF BARRY AS AFORESAID.

Your petitioner therefore prayS that all persons interested in said estate may be duly cited as required by law, and as to this Court may seem proper, AND that administration of said estate may be granted to ONE OF YOUR PETITIONERS - ROYAL CRONKHITE and that such other and further order and proceedings may be had in the premises as may be required by the statutes in such case made and provided.

For a valuable consideration to me in hand paid by ROYAL CRONKHITE of HASTINGS, BARRY COUNTY, MICHIGAN, I hereby sell assign transfer and set over all my rights titles and interest in the Personal Estate of JACOB CRONKHITE late of said County deceased. And, I hereby release all my interest in said Estate as heir at law of said deceased and said ROYAL CRONKHITE is hereby entitled to all my said interest in the said Estate--the personal property belonging to said Estate being one third part of $499, which comes to the Estate of said JACOB CRONKHITE from the Estate of STEPHEN CRONKHITE late of OTSEGO COUNTY, NEW YORK.
