Jim was the son of James Thomas Manning and Mary Elizabeth "Szykowny" Roebuck.

On December 14, 1952, he married the daughter of Ova and Dora "Mull" Cassidy at their home in Manilla, Indiana.

They were blessed with 6 sons and one daughter:
