Anna Corbin was born Anna Laura Lawton (also known as Anna Laura McColin) on January 16, 1898. She was the daughter of Etta Edna Little (1865-1945) and Wilber Austin Lawton (1857-1936)of Kansas. Anna grew up in Kansas and was raised by her aunt and uncle in Emporia, Kansas. They adopted Anna, from what family genealogical records state. In 1918 she married Robert Travis Corbin, and had their first child Harold in 1919. Later they moved westward. In Colorado they had their second child Avis, and later moved to Southern California stopping in Whittier for a few years and then onto Ione CA. That is where Anna became the Head Housekeeper for the first California Youth Authority reform school, Preston School of Industry.

Anna's name became infamously attached to the "Preston School of Industry" when she was found brutally murdered in the supply room (located in the basement of the Administration Building at the Preston School of Industry) on February 23, 1950. Although there was a suspect , Eugene Monroe, who was tried 3 times and finally acquitted, the murder was never solved. It was said by the Superintendent and Director of the School that it was more than likely a staff member who actually killed Anna because someone locked her in the supply room while her keys were still in her office untouched. No wards at the school had keys.

However, during my research of Anna's story and while writing about it in my book "BEHIND THE WALLS", I have come to the conclusion based on evidence and facts, that Eugene Monroe more than likely was Anna's murderer.

Anna's son Harold Jay Corbin, only 24 years old, was killed in action during the war in 1943. He was stationed out of Presidio of Monterey, Army Air Force (2LT # 0-666635). Buried March 14, 1950 at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, California. Anna's husband, Robert T. Corbin died on May 29,1947 in Napa, California. He is buried at East Lawn Cemetery in Sacramento.

She was survived by her daughter, Avis Corbin Barone of Sacramento.
