Frederick County

Death: Mar. 14, 1781

John's dates of birth and death are from the gravestone in Springfield Friends Cemetery, near High Point, North Carolina. The inscription reads: John Brazelton was born April 13, 1741. Died March 14, 1781.
This current gravestone is a replacement marker, the original being kept in the Springfield Friend's Museum. Reportedly, the original marked stone reads, "John Brazelton, March 1, 1781." (Sara Richardson Haworth, "Springfield 1773-1940, A History of the Establishment and Growth of the Springfield Monthly Meeting of Friends.")

10 Jan 1793: "Joseph Spurgin and Phebe Brazelton were married on January 10, 1793" (Spurgin Bible). Notice that Sarah Spurgin (b. 17 Sep 1793), the eldest child of Phebe and Joseph Spurgin, was born eight months after their marriage on 10 January 1793.

John and Sarah's first three children (Phebe, Jane, and John) were all born in Frederick County, Maryland prior to the family moving to Guilford County, North Carolina in 1776.

John Brazelton and Sarah Justice are believed to have been married between 1769-1771 in Frederick County, Maryland. Based on the date of their first child, Phebe, in 1772, and the fact that no wife was listed relinquishing dower rights in land records for John in 1765 and 1769 when he sold portions of his property in Frederick County ("Level Spring" & "Brazelton's Chance"). After the death of John Brazelton in March 1781, his widow Sarah is believed to have married a family friend, Alexander Ferguson, sometime after 1788 (probably before 1801). Alexander Ferguson was a witness on a land deed in March 1788 where Sarah Brazelton purchases 59 1/2 acres from her neighbor Henry Reed. Alexander was also the bondsman for the marriage of Sarah's son John Brazelton and Sarah Bradley in 1797. In February 1819, Alexander Ferguson's wife Sarah is mentioned in his will (Guilford County, North Carolina Will Book B, p. 468). From February 1820 to February 1826, Sarah Ferguson was noted as being insane, with various guardians appointed to care for her affairs. One of the best indicators that Sarah (Justice) Brazelton married Alexander Ferguson is that in February 1820, Haskill Jester (Sarah Brazelton's son-in-law) was appointed as a guardian for Sarah Ferguson.
