Viola Elma was the daughter of Carey Fane Brown and Eva Lucinda Crum.

Viola's mother died when she was six years old. Viola and her two younger siblings, Olive Eloise and Clovis Wayne, went to live with Viola's Crum grandmother and her aunt Bertha Crum Mood. Later Viola's father remarried and the siblings and father were reunited.

When Viola was 14 she married Olin Clayton Phelps. Olin was a laborer who worked at a lumber yard and at the Showers Furniture Factory. Viola's first child by Olin died after 12 days. While she was expecting the second child, Olin also died. Viola was a widow and a mother at 16.

After Viola's son, Dale Eugene, was born, Viola's widowed mother-in-law, Maggie Phelps, helped to raise him. Viola remarried.

Viola's 2nd husband, Edward Frederick Klotsche, had been a foundry worker and a laborer for the quarries. He had been a private in the army but had been discharged for medical reasons. Viola and Fred had several children, many of whom died very young.

By April of 1930 Fred and Viola had separated. Fred was living with his mother and step-father and had kept two of their children: Edwin Ray Klotsche and Emogene Klotsche. Viola was living with her half-sister Naomi Lucile Brough and had baby Wilma Klotsche with her. Also living at the Brough home was a border, William Henry Fleetwood.

Viola married her 3rd husband, William Henry Fleetwood, sometime around 1930. Their only child was born in Jan 1931. William Sr. died in May the same year. Viola was widowed again at 28.

In Feb of 1932 Viola married for the 4th and final time to John William "Bill" Arthur. Bill had worked in construction and for the U.S. Navy and the Ammunition Depot in Burns City. Viola and Bill had one son.

Altogether Viola married four times and had ten children. Viola died in 1956 at the age of 53.
