Wenatchee World - Wednesday, April 4, 2007

Helen passed away peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at Avalon Senior Center in East Wenatchee. She was born February 1, 1915, in Valley Ford, WA to George and Lillian (Wainright) Peffley.

She was the youngest of seven children. At the age of three, her family moved to Wilber, WA. At the age of five, her family moved to Wenatchee, WA.

Helen started school at Whitman Grade School. Later the family moved to Hanford, WA until such time as the Government bought the property and the family returned to Wenatchee, where Helen attended Junior High and graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1932.

While Helen was in High School, she was well recognized for her abilities in Track and Basketball. In the summers, she worked as a packer at the Wenatchee Produce Company where she met a box lidder named Stanley G. Pygott.

They started dating and on September 3, 1932, they, along with her brother and sister, eloped to Waterville and were married. Upon returning to Wenatchee, Helen's co-workers from Wenatchee Produce handcuffed them to a chain in the back of a pickup and drove all over town supporting a sign that said "Just Married, now watch Wenatchee grow!" From this union, two sons were born, Richard G. on January 11, 1934, and Donald E. born in April of 1936.

After many years of working with her husband at gasoline service stations, in 1943, Helen started working for Hayes Cleaners. Approximately 21 years later, she left Hayes Cleaners to attend Wenatchee Valley College where she, at the age of 50, graduated with her LPN Nursing Certificate. She worked for Deaconess Hospital and later went to work at Parkside Nursing Home and from there to Colonial Vista. After more than 35 years of care giving, Helen retired in 2002. Helen loved to fish, camp and dance. After retiring, she spent many hours volunteering at the Wenatchee Senior Citizens Center.

Helen was preceded in death by her mother and father; and all of her siblings; her husband, Stanley; his brother and two sisters; her son, Donald; an infant grandson, all of Wenatchee; and a step-grandson, Darrel Lemmons of Madison Heights, MI. She is survived by her son, Richard G. and a daughter-in-law, Melba Pygott; two sisters-in-law, Hazel Jordan and Ruth Peffley, all of Wenatchee. Helen is also survived by five grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren as well as many nieces & nephews.

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at the Jones & Jones Colonial Chapel. Following this service, a Memorial Service will be held at the First Baptist Church at 1300 Maple Street in Wenatchee. Visitation will take place at the Funeral Home on Monday, April 9, 2007, from 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. Arrangements have been entrusted to Jones & Jones Funeral Home.
