Leara Otha Johnson was born to Ida and Walter Johnson on November 9, 1909 in Patosi, Texas. She was the third of seven children, three girls and four boys. Due to the Great Depression, her family moved to California when she was a young girl. Leara worked with her family as a migrant farm worker, later settling in Bakersfield, California. She was enrolled at Vineland School where she was valedictorian of her 8th grade class. Leara also attended Bakersfield High School before moving back to Texas in the 1920's.
Leara married Samuel Britton McCormick on December 22, 1928 in Abilene, Texas. They had three children, Delores Ramona, November, 1929, Bobby Britton (my father), November, 1932, and Ronald David in July, 1937. Leara and Samuel moved to Bisbee, Arizona where they raised their family. Leara had numerous talents owning several businesses, including a restaurant and upholstery shop. In her late 40's she became a beautician, owning her own salon. She also went to business school and became a bookkeeper to keep up with the changing tax laws.
Leara was my paternal grandmother. She always had a heart for anyone in need. One day a total stranger approached her and asked her for something to eat. She gave him something to eat, and everyday after that she always had plenty of food in her house!!
Leara passed away May 18, 2007 from natural causes at the age of 97.
