Selby was born to John Thomas and Rosa Belle Selby Crawford. Selby attended grade school at Cedar Grove and Humansville, graduating from Humansville High School in 1933. He worked for various businesses in the Humansville area, eventually owning a trucking company. Following the sale of that business, He went work for his older brother Raymond, who owned Crawford Oil Company, transporting gasolnie to stations throught Missouri and Kansas.

In 1941 he married Vella Aileene Thomas. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945, in Guadalcanal, New Britain and the Philippine Islands. He joined his brother in 1947 as a partner in Crawford Oil Company. Upon Raymond's death in 1968, he purchased full ownership of Crawford Oil Company, which he maintained until its sale.

He was a member of Humansville First Baptist Church where he served in numerous capacities. He was a former member and president of Humansville Board of Education, a trustee of the Redford School of Theology at Southwest Baptist University, and a 55 year member of the American Legion Post #276.

His parents; four brothers, Raymond, Jewett, Guy, and Clay; a sister, Helen Kearney; and an infant daughter preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Vella, of the home; three children and their spouses, John and Daun Crawford and Margarette and Bob Payne, all of Humansville, and Ailene and Don Horton, Pilot Point, Texas; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
