CONWOOD BOARD CHAIRMAN, 69, DIES AT WINTER HOME Martin J. Condon III board chairman of Conwood Corp. and Memphis civic leader died at 1 p.m. yesterday at his winter home in Boca Grade, Fla. He was 69. A memorial service will take place at 4 p.m. tomorrow at St. John's Episcopal Church. The family requests that any memorials be sent to Crippled Children's Hospital and School. Mr. Condon of 3170 Southern also was a former president of Conwood Corp., a Memphis-based consumer products company. He was a member of the boards of directors of Union Planters National Bank and Schering-Plough, Inc. He was Tennessee chairman of Radio Free Europe. Mr. Condon was one of the founders of Conwood, formerly American Snuff Co., which specialized in snuff and chewing tobacco products. He began at American Snuff in 1933 in the sales department and rose to the presidency in 1949. The firm changed its name to Conwood Corp. in 1965 when it started to branch into other products. Mr. Condon had served on the Union Planters board of directors since 1951 and on the board of Plough, Inc., later Schering-Plough, since 1956. He served as assistant to the general chairman of the 1967-68 Shelby United Neighbors Campaign. He was a member and past president of the Memphis Country Club and the Tennessee Manufacturers' Association. He also was a member of the Memphis Hunt & Polo Club. He was a member of the Tennessee Club, Summit Club, and the Mud Lake Duck Club in DeWitt, Ark. Mr. Condon came to Memphis from Pelham, N.Y., at an early age. He was graduate of Princeton University and the Pennsylvania Graduate School of Business Administration. He was a Navy lieutenant during World War II. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Alice Condon; four daughters, Mrs. C.T. Bingham Jr. and Mrs. Louisa C. Strubing III, both of Memphis, Mrs. Ely Calil of London, and Mrs. Bowman Gray III of New Hope, Pa., a son, Martin J. Condon IV of Memphis, and 10 grandchildren.
