Donald E. Best, 65, of 6218 N. County Road 775 E, died at 12:50 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, in Home Hospital. He had been ill 2-1/2 years and had been hospitalized for three days.

Born Nov. 25, 1930, in Lafayette, he graduated from Jefferson High School in 1949 and was a lifelong resident of Lafayette. He married Esther E. Kull on Sept. 19, 1954, in Lafayette. She survives.

Mr. Best worked for Anheuser Busch/A.E. Staley for 27 years retiring in June 1994. Before that he worked at National Homes for 16 years and worked 30 years at Purdue University Mackey Arena. He was a Ticket taker for football, men's backetball and women's basketball games.

He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and St. James Men's Club, and was the Aid Association for Lutherans branch officer. He was a member of the 4-H Exhibits Association and a Boy Scout master. He bowled and was on a dartball league. He and his family were hosts for exchange students. An Army veteran, he served during the Korean War.

Mr. Best enjoyed woodworking and Purdue athletics.

Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Don (Karen E.) Walker of Rossville, Miss Linda E. Best of Houston, Texas, and Mrs. Tim (Marsha E.) Kern of Lafayette; three sons, Steve E. Best and Matthew E. Best, both of Lafayette; two sisters, Mrs. John (Marjorie) Deeming of Lafayette and Mrs. Mary Henson of Lafayette; and a brother, Charles R. "Bob" Best of Lafayette.

Visitation 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Calling 1 hour prior to the service at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. James Church, Pastor Daniel P. May officiating. Interment Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. Ten grandchildren survive. Memorial contributions to St. James Lutheran Church.
