Father Francis Hornung, Pioneer of Abbey, Dies
Father Francis Hornung, O.S.B., pioneer member of the Benedictine community of Holy Cross Abbey, died Tuesday night after an illness of seven months. He was 74 years of age. The Mass of Resurrection will be sung Thursday morning at 10:30 at the Abbey chapel with Abbot Norbert Kinen as main celebrant. The interment will be in the monastic cemetery on the Abbey grounds.
A native of Steubenville, Ohio, Father Francis joined the local community a year before it moved from St. Leander's Priory in Pueblo to the present location in the mid-1920s. He was ordained to the priesthood in September 1925, and after a short tenure as a teacher at The Abbey School he was assigned to parish work which made up most of his priestly life.
He worked as assistant pastor at St. John's parish in Longmont and St. Mary's in Pueblo for several years, and was pastor of the South Boulder parish and St. Theresa's in Fredrick. He also served as a hospital chaplain both at Del Norte and Lamar before returning to the Abbey where he worked as assistant librarian. Father Francis had been at St. Bernard's Hospital, Council Bluff [Bluffs], Iowa for the past four months. At his own request, he was returned to Canon City only last Saturday and died at St. Thomas More Hospital. A brother was at his bedside. Andrews funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
