1912 ~ 2003
Velda Haslam Johnson, 90, Provo, passed away May 17, 2003.
She was born Dec 5, 1912 in American Fork, UT the youngest of 13 children of Joshua and Alice Haslam. She attended public schools in Bennet and Vernal. She graduated from Vernal High School.
Velda married Carl Edwin Johnson Aug 8, 1936. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. A son, Carl Mauritz Johnson, was born to them Feb 22, 1939.
With the outbreak of World War II, her husband, Carl, was called to active duty with the army Jan 26, 1942. Upon his departure for the South Pacific she received training as a bank teller and went to work for Walker Bank in Salt Lake City. After Carl returned home from the service they moved briefly to Vernal and then to Berkeley, CA where Carl had been accepted to the University of California. In Berkeley Velda worked several years at banks in the area and then accepted a position in the Cashier's Office at the University of California. She remained at the university until she retired. She then opened her own interior decorating business until Carl retired and they returned to Utah.
Upon their retirement they built a home in Orem. They worked as ordinance workers in the Provo Temple for three years and then served an LDS mission in the Florida Tampa Mission. Following their mission they bought a home on Grandview Hill, Provo to be closer to their son, his wife, and their grandchildren.
After Velda suffered a stroke in 1996, she and Carl moved to the Seville Retirement Center, Orem and then later to Courtyard at Jamestown, Provo. Carl died Feb 24, 2003.
Velda has now moved to the other side of the veil to join Carl and have glorious reunions with her parents, brothers, sisters and friends. She is survived by her son, Carl (Els-Britt), three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was dearly loved by all who knew her and will be deeply missed.
Services, under the direction of Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, Or-em, will be Wed. May 21, 2 p.m. Grandview South LDS Stake Center, 1122 N. Grand Ave, Provo. Friends may call 12:45-1:45 p.m. prior to the services. Burial, American Fork City Cemetery.
