James was the son of Charles A. Baker and his wife, Mary Hinsdale. He was named after his paternal grandfather. When he was three years old, his family moved to a farm just outside Medina, NY.

James was baptized as an adult at the First Baptist Church in Medina, NY. He attended the University of Rochester and after graduation, entered the Baptist Theological Seminary at Rochester. In early June, 1895, James was ordained to the ministry.

James married May Harriet Rhoades on June 19, 1895. She was the daughter of Squire Munro Brown Rhoades and his wife Harriet Augusta Preston of Elbridge, NY. On July 13, 1895, he & May boarded the S. S. Furnesia for Glasgow. They spent months touring Europe before leaving for India.

James and May had four children in Ongole, India: a daughter who died there, son Abert, son Jimmie (5/10/1901), and daughter Mildred May.

Many years later, in 1947, James' autobiography "Contending the Grade in India" was published by the Biltmore Press. This includes his early life in New York, but mostly details the missionary work in India.

James and May divorced after thirty years of marriage. He married second Susan Roberts whom he met in India. She was the widow of George Miller and the daughter of Isom Roberts and his wife Susan Clemens.
