John Henry Blessing served in the American-Mexican War with the Virginia Volunteers, 1st Reg, 8th Inf, Co. D (under H. Alburtus). He became enlisted in Dayton, New York, by Sgt. Caldwell. His service expired 27 Jul 1848, at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. John's term of service was described in his family Bible as being different than the above, in that it states a date of about one year earlier than his enlistment of Jan 1847, which coincides with the email received from a Mexican-American War researcher below.

"I am writing a book on the 1st Regt. of Virginia Volunteers in the Mexican War. John H. Blessing was one of those men. Do you have any additional biographical information on Blessing? I believe him to buried in the Old City Cemetery at Mt. Carroll. Can you confirm? What are the names DOBs of his children? Note: References SC & WC are for Mexican War Pension Claims. Originals are available for inspection at the National Archives. I have transcribed most of the biographical information however. Sorry, MW pension does not disclose the parents of either John or Susan. Thanks. Page Johnson"
