Dan Herrington was the oldest child of J.W. and Louisa Adams Herrington. The family moved from Marion County, Arkansas to Mayes County, Oklahoma in 1911. Dan became a teacher of physics and chemistry and a school superintendent. While serving as superintendent of the Salina, Oklahoma schools he married Miss Mary Palmer. She was a teacher in the Salina schools. They were married on December 16, 1916 in Wagoner, Oklahoma while on their way to Muskogee to buy Christmas gifts for the Salina school chidren. Mr. Herrington served as superintendent in several other Oklahoma schools and taught anatomy classes in Northeastern State Teachers College first pre-med courses in the early 1920's. Later the Herringtons owned mercantile businesses in Washington and Mayes Counties. They moved to Tahlequah, Oklahoma in 1947 to enroll their daughter, Beth, in Northeastern State College. Mr. Herrington's last teaching position was in Lincoln, Arkansas in 1954 where he taught physics and math. He did this to reactivate his earlier Arkansas teaching years for credit in the Oklahoma Teachers Retirment System. He was the first president of the Tahlequah Retired Teachers Association.
