William was the eldest child of Pleasant & Mary Ann Hicks Grimes. He married Susie Hammond, the daughter of George Wesley Hammond & Angeline Cook Hammond, on September 22, 1888 in Owen County, Kentucky. The couple settled in Jessamine County and were the parents of five daughters; Annie, Lula, Audie, Allie and Josie Grace Grimes. Mr. Grimes supported his family by farming his own land.
