John was an attorney in Ottumwa, Iowa for about twenty years, and served as registrar during reconstruction of the South after the Civil War.
He was widowed at age 50, and after a time of grieving, married to Agnes Hastings. John and Agnes moved to Des Moines, Iowa, to be near his brother Michael, and eventually moved to Mercer Island in Seattle. His son, Harry Lincoln Devin, was a pioneer of Sedro Woolley, Washington.
