Harriet Sherman was born in German Flatts [now Herkimer], New York. She arrived in San Francisco from Herkimer County, New York on March 17, 1856 to meet her childhood playmate, Russel Heath, where they were married. She died in Carpinteria, leaving her husband and an only child, James R. Heath.

An old newspaper dated Oct 28 1899 read:

"Mrs. Harriet Heath, wife of Hon Russell Heath died this afternoon. She came to Santa Barbara in the early 1850's, the first white woman to settle in the old Mexican town."
