He was a Bombardier Lt. in the 457th Bomber Group. While on a bombing mission over Politz, Poland in October 1944, he was wounded when the plane was hit. Two engines went out and the plane was severely crippled. With him too severely wounded to be able to parachute, which the crew would soon be ordered to do, they, knowing that his wounds were mortal, decided they would not leave their comrade alone to die in the plane as it tumbled to the ground. They choose to remain with him and somehow managed to get that plane back to Sweden when they made a crash landing. He would soon pass away in a Swedish hospital.
