Pastor Joseph Ervin Hughes, 62, husband of Marilyn Ann (Lowe) Hughes of Alta Drive, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville.
He was born May 19, 1946, in Panama City, Florida, a son of the late Joseph Coy and Gracie Lucille (Sims) Hughes.
Pastor Hughes was a veteran of the United States Marines from 1964 until 1968, with service to his country in Vietnam.
He was pastor of Rejoicing Life Baptist Church in Stuarts Draf. During his 40 years of ministry, following his love for music, he was also an accomplished Christian and Gospel song writer.
In addition to his wife, family members include two sons and a daughter-in-law, 2nd Lieutenant Joseph E. and Rosemary Hughes of Greenville, South Carolina, and Christopher R. Hughes of Norfolk; a daughter, Josalyn R. Hughes of Staunton; a brother, James Harold Hughes of Lynnhaven, Florida; two grandchildren, Josef Haydn Jegg Hughes and Amelia Evelyn Hughes; numerous nieces and nephews and great- nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Hughes Miklozcak.
A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, April 25, 2009, at Ridgeview Baptist Church by the Reverend Jon Jenkins and the Reverend Ricky Poteat. Burial will follow at Augusta Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers will be church members.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Business Men's Fellowship USA of Mt. Crawford.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m., Friday, April 24, 2009, at Henry Funeral Home.
