George mustered in on 10-24-1861 at Camp Crossman as a private at age 21. He was promoted to Corporal.


George was killed in a skirmish at Strawberry Plains, Deep Bottom in Virginia on July 18, 1864. Interment 10/30/1864



He was the son of Robert Maxwell and Catherine Lower (Lauer).


Brother of:

1st Lt. Martin M. Maxwell
(who also served with his brother George in "C" Company under their sister's husband Captain Ezra D. Brisbin. Martin was discharged on a Surgeon's certificate on October 24, 1864, a few months after his brother George's death.)

In 1850, the Maxwell family was living in Woodberry Township, Blair County, PA. Robert (43) working as a plasterer and Catherine (36) Mary (18) Martin (17), George (14), Ann (8), Jane(6) and Catherine (3).


In 1860, George was working the farm of his Uncle William Lower in Woodberry Township.
