J. D. Ball's parents are unknown. He may have had a sister named Julia. In 1844 he left New York for Wisconsin where he farmed until he caught gold fever in 1850. In April 1850 he crossed the plains with horse teams, arriving in Placerville, El Dorado Co., CA in August of 1850. He mined there until 1852 when he left and settled in Anderson, Mendocino Co., CA. 1 Jan 1855 he married Melissa Flavilla Kendall in Soda Spring Rancho, Russian River, Sonoma Co., CA. Melissa was a widow with two small children, Ellen and Ethel Sheffield. J.D. and Melissa had 8 more children, all born in Boonville, Mendocino Co., CA who were Julia Flavilla, Mary Paralee, Martha Merinda, Jay Dee, Chardon Scott, Emmett Burnham, Dreme Life, and Emily Ermanonda. He was a successful sheep rancher and orcharist.
