After the deaths of Theophilus, Phebe and Oliver, Jared Hulbert (Phebe's father) was granted guardianship of the remaining four children; James, Wilbur, Mary and Charles. Jared also petitioned the courts to sell all of Theophilus' real estate (valued at about $8000) to provide for the upkeep and education of these four children.
