First child and son of John Arthur and Anna Nixon Vickers Tooke. Came to Louisiana with his parents when he was 10 years old.He had thirteen years at Hickory Grove Plantation in Bienville Parish before entering the Civil War at the age of 23. At the close of the war, James Allen returned home to live there a few months before marrying his first wife, March 19, 1866, recorded in Book A, p. 148, Sparta, LA, Winnifred J. Shehee, daughter of Henry D. and M. E. Shehee, b. Jan16, 1847, d. May 1, 1870 at Tooke home. Buried in Tooke cemetery. Two children were born to this union, Elwood who lived to be five and became his father's idol and little Monsieur who died an infant. Both buried in the Tooke Cem. James built a home on his portion of the land of the plantation near the lake and here lived with both his first and second wives. During these years times were hard; the South was going through the Reconstruction Period and very few could boast of prosperity and this was true of life on Hickory Grove Plantation. Some of the lnad had to be sold to help meet expenses and the sons were trying to carry on with work that had been done by slaves. While here on the home place James married his second wife, Feb. 20, 1872, Mattie McDaniel, daughter of Kirk Patrick and Susan W. McDaniel, recorded at Sparta, LA, b. 1845 d. about 1882 buried in Bethel Cem. near Dubberly, LA.and they had: Julia, Kirk Patrick, Henry Allen and Anna Sue.

Married third to Susan Roach, May 4, 1887. Daughter of Eli Roach and Eliza Butler Roach of Colombiana, AL, b. 1835 d. 1890. Buried in Tooke Cem. They had James Arthur b 1888
Jame Allen sold his home at Hickory Grove and bought another place near Andrew's Chapel Church and after his third marriage took his four children to live with him. The youngest of these four, Julia Adelaide, was left with her grandmother to be raised there. On Nov. 20, 1892 he married his fourth wife, Mathilda Precious Dance, daughter of George Washington Dance and Annis Kilgore, Claiborne Parish, LA. b. Oct. 16, 1858 d. June 4, 1936 in Doyline, La. Buried at Salem Cem, Athens, La. They had Annice b 1900

Was in the Civil War-Private, Music, Co B, 12th Louisiana Regiment Infantry. He was in all of Joseph Johnson's battles, surrendered in Johnson's Company in N. C.
