Narsworthy Hunter
Birth: c. 1756
Virginia, USA
Death: Mar. 11, 1802
Washington
District of Columbia
District Of Columbia, USA

US Congressman. Elected to the Seventh Congress as a Delegate from the Mississippi Territory, he served from 1801 until his death. There is little information on Hunter's life and his birthplace is unknown. By the mid-1790s he was active as a Major of Horse in a Mississippi Militia group he helped organize, and was later commissioned inspector of the military posts on the east side of the Mississippi River. In this capacity he delivered dispatches to Philadelphia and presumably to Washington, DC. Hunter was the first person to represent Mississippi in the US Congress, though as a Delegate he had no voting privileges. According to his obituary in the National Intelligencer, he died in Washington "in the 45th year of his age" and was buried at Presbyterian Cemetery in Georgetown. When that burial ground was slated for demolition in the early 1890s he was reinterred at Congressional Cemetery. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
