She was the daughter of Swedish immigrants, Wilhelm Magnus Hjort "a.k.a. William M. Hiort" and Charlotta Olivia Andersson. She became a teacher after college and taught in the Peekskill Public School System until her retirement in 1958/1959. She taught English at Uriah Hill Junior High School and then at Drum Hill Junior High School throughout her career. She was a member of the Peekskill branch of the American Association of University Women and had served as the American delegate for the 8th conference of the International Federation of University Women in 1939 which took place in Sweden.
